Heat

You may consider it your enemy, it has definitely been responsible for more than a few oddly shaped pistons and blown head gaskets. The fact of the matter is that heat is simply energy, it works both for us and against us. A tremendous amount of heat is generated from the combustion process and put to work, the more we can harness the more efficient our engine becomes.

Approximately 1/3 of that heat is wasted through exhaust gas ( which can be utilized by turbochargers, but that is another story ) approximately another 1/3 is actually used to drive the piston downward and get the job done. The remainder of this heat energy is radiated outward from the cylinder and your cooling system is designed to transfer that heat to your coolant and pass it through a heat exchanger to keep engine temperatures in check.

Z33 cooling circuit

This is the cooling circuit diagram for the VQ35 straight from the 03 350Z factory service manual. One look at this diagram will tell you that this aint your granpappy’s ol’ small block. Shortly after the 350z was released, aftermarket performance parts came pouring out of the woodwork to support enthusiasts.

Before you knew it there were big time turbo kits and high powered engine builds to the tune of 600whp. It was then that these tuners began to see the apparent downfall of the cooling system for the VQ35 used in the Z33. In this diagram you will see the rear cylinders ( #5 and #6 ) circled in red. If you follow the flow chart from the water pump you will see that coolant flows into the engine from that point, up through the heads and into the engine block. Coolant flows from the front of the head to the rear and exits through the water pipe connected to both sides.

The block on the other hand is another story, the coolant flows from the front of the engine to the rear cylinders and has nowhere else to go. I’m not about to call out Nissan engineers (although I’ve had cause to curse them in the past) because under normal and even spirited driving conditions the factory cooling system will keep engine temps manageable. However, under heavy load conditions such as a long highway pull on a high powered engine or pulling lots of weight uphill, coolant flow to the rear cylinders is insufficient and can lead to troublesome or even catastrophic engine failure in the form of blown head gaskets or over expanded pistons that will have a once smooth cylinder looking more like a funnel.

Pathfinder cooling circuit

Enter the Pathfinder. The VQ35 found in the Pathfinder is only slightly different than the Z33 VQ35, but the one major difference worthy of discussion in this particular post is pointed out in red on this cooling circuit diagram.

If you follow the same flow, from the water pump and into the engine block, you’ll find that the coolant now has a “back door” out of the block where it will meet the other superheated coolant from the heads and return to the radiator. A thermostat is in place between the block and water pipe (shown on the diagram as an X) simply to let the engine reach operating temperature more quickly and reduce emissions.

Nissan engineers saw this one coming during their road tests for the Pathfinder, though they didn’t tune those VQ35′s to unscrupulous amounts of power, they more likely just ran them really hard off road and hauled lots of weight uphill. There’s no telling how many engines they scrapped before they decided on this system, but their loss is our gain.

Many fine retailers have put together “Pathfinder cooling mod” kits that will supply you with the rear coolant pipe, thermostat, hose and plate that you can swap right into your Z33 to greatly improve your coolant flow and safeguard your rear cylinders.

Is it something that your momma needs on her sedan to run to the grocery store? No, but you should give the Pathfinder system as well as other “reliability mods” some consideration if you plan to really put your VQ35 through a beating with lots of boost or serious track time.

Anyways My G is my daily driver so I tried to keep the look as OEM as possible. So I put a Full Nismo body kit because this kit just looks like it came out of the factory, don’t you agree?

To think a couple months ago my G35 was pretty much stock. 2010 was the year for my G35′s transformation and i went all out as you can see but i still have much more to do.

Your probably wondering what’s with the Blue wheels? Those aren’t just any ordinary blue wheels. The color is called Fzero Blue from Volk Racing and I believe there’s only 2 sets in 19″ with +12 offsets ever made. So trust me when I say that you probably wont see any G or Z with these set of wheels at a car shows you attend to. That may sound a bit cocky but take it how you want it. HA!

I think the G35 has one of the most sexiest stock rear ends period!. Everything about a G35 is just perfect in my eyes. Any angle , every corner you look at the G35 lines wont disappoint.

When I first saw this car I was browsing the forums over @ G35NYC.com and I was flat out amazed that someone took the time to be creative and put some ill graphics on their show G. Little did I know then, that it was a DAILY DRIVEN G. Now this VQ35 powered turbo G, has got all the trimmings, including a built engine courtesy of VinnyTenRacing.com. I believe it pushes over 500whp, and I forgot what he ran at the track, but I know it was some impressive numbers, with full interior, system and all. I’m sure a lot of you enthusiasts have seen this vehicle already, but we here @ VQ35.com wanted to make sure it got a spot on our featured cars line up. Alright, enough of the small talk, on with the goods!

Q: What does the VIAS/SSIM Block Plate do?

A: This is strictly a block plate kit for those that want to remove their VIAS (Variable Induction Air Control System). That will hurt low end power, but since you are removing an obstruction, it will help top end. You will gain approximately 5hp on midrange and top end power.

The other use for this block plate and considered the best option as far as performance is known as the SSIM (Secret Sauce Intake Manifold). That name was created years ago by a member of the Maxima discussion forums. This involves cutting the shelf out of the main chamber of the upper intake manifold and removing the VIAS assembly. This will still lose low end power and some midrange, but the gains in the top end are very noticeable. It’s definitely a modification that is worthwhile if you are serious about increasing top end HP. An engine tune and extended rev limiter is highly recommended if you want to get the full potential out of the SSIM.

Some of you may know him as z350boy, but just about everyone knows him as “Pops” from OTSZ (Official TSZ). This man has done up his VQ35 powered Nissan 350Z to the fullest extent. I don’t have all the details on the car right now, but I do know he recently had VTR (Vinny Ten Racing) build up a nice engine for him. Complete with all the power to kill those “XZOTIKS” out there, who think that because they spent 200,000 on a car, that their shit don’t stink, and can walk over everyone on the roads! Well let me tell you, Pop’s VQ35 is not the one to mess with.

With Amuse suspension that tightens and lowers as the speed increases while he’s pushin’ it to the limit, this car handles like butter baby. You can actually see it lower slightly when he starts getting on it. Gotta love it man! I know we do!

Now everyone is a fan of a built motor, well this VQ35 was not always built. He was running a JWT TT on a stock block with some tune and ripping challengers apart. This VQ35 is putting out around 500hp to the wheels and is roaming the streets of NY, ready to show and proove to the big boys, the exotics. You gotta love the look on their faces when the VQ35 shits on their 200,000 ride.

I don’t have many pictures of this badass VQ35, but I shall link up with Pops soon and request more pictures and information for the blog here @ VQ35.com.

All pictures were provided by C3 Photography, based out of NYC.

I do have a video of this VQ35 in action against another boosted VQ35HR, so check that out below.

Nitto NT05:

This review was done in the Dallas, TX and surrounding area in the month of July and August weather, 2009 – temp ranges in 90’s to 102 primarily:

From the very beginning, I mean moments after mounting the NT05’s on my 2004 Nissan 350Z I instantly became excited. (Normally I’m NOT raving over trying new tires, as I have had many many many different tires on my 350z, being an avid drifter and local autocross entrant.) Reason being, my 350z is equipped with a full two-way clutch locking differential and simply backing out of my garage after installation and turning out of my driveway I heard my rear differential clunk and pop a lot louder and more pronounced than ever.

Nitto NT05

Definitely much more versus diff lock and tire slip and squeal. That alone was a clear sign that these tires were very sticky and is what got me excited to run these tires.

I had a great amount of time daily driving them in dry weather, so for the remaining section of the review (until noted) will be dry contact driving over multiple outings.

The NT05’s stick greatly, point the car in the direction your aiming and holding true is very confidence inspiring with these tires. I would honestly have to say a notch above some of the best tires I have tried. Grip is definitely noticeable and in general the NT05’s give you a great overall sense of “hugging” the street.

I then went to a remote road section and was able do switch backs and overly aggressive grip U-turns in order to see if I could feel or loose the NT05’s and was able to do so, but only on wildly aggressive maneuvers so in my book they preformed amazing. The sidewalls held great and I can’t say these tires are a hard sidewall but they are definitely not soft. I did specifically try to rim check with these tires going over horrible protruding railroad crossings and I was never able to hit wheel so the sidewalls held up great. Comfort level was great and never any harsh shock or jerk to prove otherwise.

Highway driving is smooth, quiet and effortless, there is no “humm” or “burr burr burr” sound while cruising. Lane changes over uneven road/highway surfaces were smooth and clean, no sudden jerks or stiff sidewalls pulling one way or the other. There were no loud sounds or noticeable unwanted steering wheel pull/vibrations. I was able to drive on both asphalt and concrete sectional highway surfaces when testing the NT05’s.

I was able to track (Autocross) the NTO5’s and was happy with them and never once lost confidence on where I was pointing or where I wanted to go………grip was evident through out the entire event on the front mounted NT05’s.

For the rear im certain my two way differential had a lot of influence on the following but I was able to feel “give” but very controllable and smooth. There was no instant loss of traction or fishtail action at all. The NT05’s were very predictable and confidence inspiring and I was able to progressively improve my times as the event continued which is a clear sign of conform ability and adaptability for me being someone who has run many good tires before. I quickly knew how they handled and was overall extremely happy with their autocross performance for a street tire. They were definitely very very comparable to a running a full no thread R-compound tire.

WET WEATHER TEST:

My wet weather assessment consist of about 25 percent of the time over dry daily driving:

I did get to briefly test the NT05’s in wet weather daily driving. They did defiantly perform well. I will admit they are amazing in dry conditions, yet they are nearly as awesome in wet. I use the word “nearly” purposely to ensure everyone knows that they are a better dry tire. I was able to maintain grip in mild speed u-turns, faster main road exits and off ramps. It took aggressive driving for them to loose grip.

I find that more than acceptable since that type of driving shouldn’t be done and was honestly asking for trouble. However, I figured for me I want to know the limits and aimed to push them regardless. Overall I drive responsibly in wet and have no problem or worry daily driving NT05’s in wet condition weather after my assessment of them in those conditions.

Drifting:

Yes I did get a chance to take the car out to a safe open spot and drift.
This was the last thing I wanted to do, not knowing weather or not the tires would chunk and get destroyed.

The rear NT05’s have way too much grip that it did take a lot for me to initiate drift. The front NT05’s were amazing…………..one more time…Amazing! I was able to control drift, counter steer and once again stay confident in where I was pointed and wanted to go. I loved the NTO5’s for this greatly!

The tires wore evenly and no horrible damage was done to the tread that would keep me from driving home. Unless of course I stayed drifting on them till they needed replacement.

In the end I’m overall really excited about driving the NT05’s and plan on getting more for my Z and my wife’s Saturn Sky. I must say it once again “The NT05’s are full of grip and very confidence inspiring.” Try them out if you get a chance I would find it hard for anyone to be disappointed with them.

I am pretty sure he won Best of Show at the annual Stillen show over in cali this May 2010. He deserves it! That is truely one of the best G35′s rockin’ a VQ35 in the game right now. RRYDE (Randy aka caskyline) did the build, to absolute perfection! Marcus Cooke Photography handled this shoot with the utmost quality and taste in choice of angles. This is what it looks like when you have people that know how to mod and also photograph, come together. You get something GREAT! VQ35 FTMFW!
